This creative writing workshop is for writers who want to read and write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, in a supportive, interactive community of like-minded writers. Through workshops, writing exercises, and analyses, we focus on developing plot, characterization, and, above all, a unique authorial voice. During class sessions, students respond to and discuss short stories, poems, and creative nonfiction pieces they’ve read as homework, share and workshop their own writing, and offer one another constructive feedback. Although the course is suitable for beginners, it takes students beyond the basics to a deeply advanced understanding of storytelling. Teacher feedback guides each writer through the process. Students finish the course with a portfolio of work they can submit to contests, competitions, and publications, or use as the groundwork to continue developing their skills. (Students will be required to complete weekly assignments and participate regularly in group discussions.)
